About Bay Psychiatric Associates | TMS
Bay Psychiatric Associates (BPA) has been a leader in the field of TMS Therapy since 2009. BPA has been providing inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services to the San Francisco Bay Area since 1994. Our inpatient service is centered at the Herrick campus of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, California. This facility is one of the largest and most comprehensive psychiatric programs in Northern California, with over 100 inpatient psychiatric beds as well as several partial hospitalization programs. We provide a full range of both inpatient and day treatment services to these programs. BPA's outpatient offices are located at two sites: one is across the street from Herrick hospital and the other is a short distance away in Berkeley.

Rick J. Trautner, MD (Medical Director)
Rick J. Trautner, MD, Director of BPA|TMS, graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. He currently serves as the President of Bay Psychiatric Associates, Medical Director of Mental Health Services at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, and has a busy inpatient and outpatient practice.
Dr. Trautner became interested in TMS because, “TMS is the first clearly effective, non-systemic neuromodulation procedure in psychiatry. It is an exciting new treatment which yields truly amazing results.”
Derek Schumm, MD (Assistant Director)
Derek Schumm, MD graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School and completed his residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
Dr. Schumm uses an integrative approach to diagnosis and treats a full spectrum of mental disorders. He has particular experience treating depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and diseases arising from change in life condition or circumstance. Dr. Schumm believes in doctor-patient collaboration, clearly defined and approachable treatment goals, honesty, and integrity throughout the treatment process.
TMS therapy represents one of the developing and leading edges of discovery and treatment in this field and is often incorporated into a treatment plan for patients whose depression has not responded to medications or who have not been able to tolerate side effects.
Tammy Chin, MD
Tammy Chin, MD graduated from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and also completed her psychiatry residency at UCSF. Dr. Chin provides psychopharmacology and psychotherapy treatment for patients in her outpatient practice and is excited to offer neuromodulation treatment through TMS.
Dr. Chin manages a full spectrum of mental disorders. She is particularly interested in the management of mood and anxiety disorders, cultural psychiatry, and multiple types of psychotherapy. She takes a collaborative approach in treatment planning with her patients to help her patients reach their treatment goals and improve quality of life.
Lawrence Cohen, MD
Lawrence Cohen MD, one of our TMS practitioners here at Bay TMS, graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco. He has been in practice for 25 years utilizing psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy in addition to TMS therapy.
Dr. Cohen specializes in working with people suffering from a variety of mood and anxiety concerns, and is committed to providing the most effective available treatments for his patients.

John Cruz, MD
John M. Cruz, M.D. is a board certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Dartmouth College, his post-baccalaureate pre-medical certificate from Columbia University, his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, and completed his adult psychiatry training from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship from The Johns Hopkins Hospital where he served as chief resident. Dr. Cruz sees children, adolescents, and adults. He treats a variety of psychiatric disorders that include: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, disruptive and impulse-control disorders, bipolar disorders, and psychotic disorders.
In his practice, he utilizes a number of therapeutic modalities depending on the patient’s needs. These modalities include: Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Parent Management Training, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy, Mindfulness Based Therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and medication when necessary.
Dr. Cruz is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Northern California Psychiatric Society, and the Northern California Regional Organization of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Cruz became interested in TMS because, “TMS has been shown through FDA randomized controlled trials to be an extremely effective, non-invasive treatment with no systemic side effects for treating people with medication resistant depression.”
Corey Priesman, MD
Corey Priesman, MD earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed a residency in psychiatry at California Pacific Medical Center. He utilizes a range of therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychopharmacotherapy to treat a wide range of patients in his outpatient and hospital based practices.
Dr. Priesman is pleased to now offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to patients through Bay TMS.

Jason Bermak, MD, PhD
Jason C. Bermak, MD, PhD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, also with a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology. He has a private practice and additionally serves as the medical director of SF-CARE, Inc., a small clinical research center located in San Rafael. Dr. Bermak’s clinical trials are currently focused on developing novel treatments and treatment combinations for those suffering from conditions of depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. These new treatments include the use nasal spray formulations of ketamine for depression and novel long-acting antipsychotics for psychosis.
Dr. Bermak’s clinical duties are currently outpatient focused and have, in recent years, also included institutional and inpatient positions at the California Medical Facility, Napa State Hospital, and Saint Francis Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Bermak is also a partner at Anvyl Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a non-commercial biopharmaceutical company aimed at developing therapies for neurocognitive and psychiatric disorders. He has authored or coauthored more than a dozen publications stemming from his CNS and drug development-related research endeavors. He received his psychiatric residency training at the University of California, San Francisco, his MD and PhD in pharmacology at the University of California, Irvine, and a BS in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.

Sarah Polfliet, MD
Dr. Sarah Polfliet is a psychiatrist practicing in San Rafael. Educated at the University of Virginia, trained at UCSF, and certified by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, she provides adult psychotherapy, psychopharamology and non-invasive techniques for neuromodulation.
Dr. Polfliet has experience treating a wide variety of psychological and emotional difficulties with psychotherapy and/or medication/therapeutic interventions. Her areas of specialization include the treatment of mood disorders (including major depression and bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders, psychotic spectrum illness, trauma, emotional difficulties associated with medical illnesses and eating disorders.
Dr. Polfliet has extensive experience prescribing a wide variety of medications and is up to date on the latest advancements in neuroscience and psychopharmacology. TMS therapy represents a unique modality of non-invasive treatment that can address some of the most challenging symptoms of mental illness.
Dr. Polfliet believes in treating the whole person, recognizing that all aspects of the patients' health (physical, emotional and mental) are intimately related. She practices a collaborative approach with her clients to guide treatment decisions and is able to discern what approach to treatment is most likely to be effective.
