Take a moment and hit pause.

Open yourself up to your surroundings and welcome mindfulness.

Think about all of the astonishing things happening in your body this moment. Your heart is pumping blood throughout your system. Your breathing is slow and relaxed. Your fingers typed your way to this article through keyboard memorization and all this happened while blinking a few times since you started reading this post…WOW!

There’s no doubt that the human body is amazing! There are so many interesting facts about our bodies and their daily function but this week, during Brain Awareness Week, we’re putting the spotlight on one of our favorite organs- the brain. Here are 10 interesting facts about the brain that will blow your mind…

There are 100 billion neurons in the brain

It’s hard to even imagine how big one billion really is. If you counted continuously in perfect rhythm, one number per second, without breaks for eating, sleeping and LIFE, then it would take over 31 years to count to ONE billion (not 100 billion) Conclusion:  it’s humanly impossible!

There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels in your brain.

The distance around the world at the equator is 24,900 miles. Therefore, all of our brain blood vessels could wrap around the earth four times!

In early pregnancy, neurons develop at an amazing rate of 250,000 per minute.

This is why proper prenatal care is essential for a healthy mom and baby.

The human brain will grow three times it’s size in the first year of life.

And it will keep growing until roughly 18 years of age.

It’s made from 60% of fat

The brain is one of the fattest organs in the human body. Healthy fats like omega-3 are essential for brain health.

Headaches are caused by a chemical reaction in your brain

Combined with the muscles and nerves of your neck and head which is why there are a variety of different types of headaches.

Brain freeze is real!

It’s technically “sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia”. The brain detects the cold from your beverage or food. The coolness actually chills your blood vessels and arteries which causes them to constrict and sometimes cause pain in your forehead. Don’t worry, once they are warm they’ll open back up.

Your vision actually comes from the back of your brain

Seems a little off since our eyes are in the front of our head, but the occipital lobe is located at the back of our heads and is responsible for vision.

Short term memory is a thing

We’ve all been mid thought, got distracted, and then couldn’t remember what we were talking about, right? This has to do with our brain’s capacity for holding small amounts of information in the active mind state.

We have 70,000 thoughts per day

That’s a lot of thinking!

Sleep matters for good brain health

Good sleep is essential for our overall health and wellness. We must rest for our brains and bodies to function properly to retain memory and good cognitive skills.

Take care of your brain! It’s an organ just like any other organ in your body. If you are feeling off, listless, or depressed it could be a sign that your brain needs some care just like any other part of your body. It’s important to end the stigma surrounding mental health! Antidepressants don’t work for everyone but TMS offers hope. Find out if you’re a candidate today by clicking here!
